📢THE DIGEST
A Room Worth Having
Two Ankeny middle schools now have Brain Health Retreat Rooms (a dedicated space where students can take a 15-minute break when they're feeling overwhelmed). Northview and Southview both have the rooms now, equipped with couches, hug chairs, coloring stations, fidgets, and snacks. Students fill out a brief survey when they arrive and check in with a licensed social worker on site. The rooms were installed by Iowa-based organization Brain Health Now, which works to reduce the stigma around mental health in schools. "Sometimes there's a stigma to mental health, but it's real," said Northview principal Kevin Biggs. "When they feel comfortable, they're more apt to learn." (more)
Free Branch Drop-Off for Ankeny Residents
After all the recent rain and wind, this one's timely. Ankeny residents can drop off tree branches free of charge at the City Maintenance Facility at 211 SE Lorenz Drive. Branches must be between 1 and 8 inches in diameter (anything larger can't go through the chipper). No stumps, roots, or other yard waste. Bring proof of residency, stack branches cut-end out at the back of your vehicle, and make sure your trailer is clear of ropes, chains, or anything else that could get pulled into the equipment. Commercial vehicles and trucks larger than a pickup aren't allowed. A good excuse to finally deal with that pile in the backyard. 9am-3pm

200 New Townhomes Coming to Ankeny
Hubbell Realty is bringing a $46.8 million rental townhome community to Ankeny's northeast side. The 200-unit development, called Marlow 35, is planned for the northeast corner of NE Delaware Avenue and NE Ninth Street — 16 acres just west of I-35, near DMACC and several major employers. Units will be one and two-story rental townhomes with a pool, clubhouse, fitness center, dog park, and rentable garages. Construction starts this fall with completion expected in early 2028. Hubbell pointed to Ankeny's 14.3% population growth over the past five years and a multifamily vacancy rate below the metro average as reasons for the investment. Hard to argue with the math. (more)
