🏙️CIVIL NEWS

E-Bike and E-Scooter Ordinance

We touched on this ordinance a few weeks ago but for the skimmers out there: ride right, pass left, slow down around pedestrians, and maybe don't let your 12-year-old hit 40 mph on the bike path.

But for real, Ankeny's new e-bike and e-scooter ordinance is officially in effect. The rules are pretty straightforward: 20 mph max on trails and sidewalks, no e-motos on bike paths, and if you're rolling through Uptown or The District, you're walking it. Violations are technically a simple misdemeanor, though the Ankeny Police Department says they're starting with education before writing tickets.

The ordinance is part of a nine-city "Ride Safe 'n Smart" campaign launching across the metro, aimed at keeping trails safe as warmer weather brings more people outside. (source)

The Innovation Hub

For those of you who haven’t been following along in the past few weeks… Construction is moving fast on Ankeny's new Innovation Hub, the school district's upcoming facility for hands-on programming in areas like culinary arts, health sciences, computer science, and agriculture. Once the school year wraps up, crews will shift into higher gear on demolition of the existing baseball and softball fields kicking off in June to make room for new ones, and of course, 11th Street is getting rebuilt this summer as part of the project. Northview will still be open and usable in the meantime. (source)

🏳️SPORTS

Ankeny Athletes Perform at Drake Relays

The battling schools showed out in the blue oval this past weekend, leaving with a haul of white flags, medals, and school records to prove it.

Girls first, and Ankeny Fanatic is reporting a cross-town 1-2 combo in the 800. Ankeny's Makenna Madetzke took gold in the event, with Centennial's Rebecca Flick following right behind with the silver. Ankeny's Lena Bruening medaled with a third-place long jump at 18'5.25", and Centennial's Ava Barten quietly earned hardware of her own with an eighth-place finish in the 400 hurdles. The relay teams were also impressive, with Ankeny winning gold in the sprint medley & silver in the 4x400, while Centennial placed fourth in both the 4x200 and 4x400 and fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay. Oh, and both schools set multiple school records on Friday. Neat.

The boys weren't outdone. Ankeny's Hayden Carlson delivered the performance of the weekend, taking the champion’s white flag in the 110 hurdles and setting the school-record at 13.80 seconds. Ankeny's Ike Smith added a third-place finish in the mile, giving the Hawks two individual medalists on the day. On the relay side, Ankeny placed third in the shuttle hurdle relay and the Centennial boys rounded things out with a third in the 4x800. Solid weekend for the town’s fastest athletes.
